If you know me, you know that most of the time I have a book on me (or my Kindle) so I’m quite well-versed in the area of literature. Over this summer, I had the chance to read some of the best books I have ever read. Their prose is beautiful, their characters lovable and the plot thrilling. If you want to get into reading or want to find some new books, please consider one of my favourites and be sure to tell me how you liked it through socials or commenting. Also, I would subscribe to not miss any future posts!
Remarkably Bright Creatures
This is a book about an older woman who works at the aquarium and develops a relationship with a remarkably bright octopus. Undeniably, it sounds slightly obscure but it’s one of the most heartwarming books I have ever read. This book is good for a light read since it’s not too deep but just thought-provoking enough. Furthermore, its writing is beautiful in a simple kind of way. I rated this one 5 stars on Goodreads.
Shadow of the Wind
I read this about two years ago and the story still lives with me to this day. This one is obscure but in the best way possible. It follows a man who finds a hidden library and takes a book from it. Because of this book, a strange man dressed in black follows him around Gothic Barcelona. In the meantime, the protagonist tries to win the love of a girl he’s known from childhood so it has a little romance in there for you too. This book is the perfect amount of thriller to keep you reading.
The Book Thief
‘The Book Thief’’s characters are unparalleled. All of them are unique and despite their shortcomings, the narrator, Death, makes you love them all the same. Their interactions with each other make them even more precious and by the end, you’ll feel as if they’re real people you’ve known all your life. It’s set in Nazi Germany but don’t let the theme of war put you off because its descriptions shouldn’t bother since they’re quite mild. If you feel like one last cosy read before the summer, this is the book for you. It’s a classic for a reason.
Lessons in Chemistry
A woman, a dog and a daughter. This book is all about them and their struggles in a very patriarchal world. The woman works in chemistry and she faces extreme sexism in her work place leading to her getting fired. She then applied her chemistry knowledge to cooking and ends up having her own TV show.
Island of Missing Trees
This novel’s plot is a Romeo and Juliet type of love story. It’s about a Greek Cypriot boy falling in love with a Turkish Cypriot girl who then fled to England and had a child, Ada. Unfortunately, the mother dies and Ada has to find her way with her dad who spends most of his time with his plants. Did I mention the book is partly narrated by a fig tree? ‘The Island of Missing Trees’ was nominated for the Women’s Fiction Prize so that should speak for itself but it really is a good book to transport you to the realties of a regional conflict which happened not so long ago.
